Panorama from Hoher Kasten

This panorama from the platform on Hoher Kasten is composed of five individual shots. I used Hugin to stitch the photos together. The lake in the center is Sämtisersee; the Fälensee at the turning point of the hike can't be seen from here. Rhine river is at the left, Appenzell is at the right.

Track in Google Maps

I recorded the track using TrackRec on iPhone and exported it as KML, then imported that to Google Maps. Orange marker: Brülisau (cable car valley station), green marker: Hoher Kasten (summit), blue marker: Restaurant Ruhesitz (kickboard rental). Säntis and Altmann can be seen at the lower left corner.

September 24, 2016 promised to be a splendid day, and one of the last good ones of the year for hiking, so I decided to go for the geological hiking path at Hoher Kasten. I took the aerial cable car from Brülisau up to Hoher Kasten where one can enjoy a wonderful panorama from the Rhine valley and Vorarlberg mountains to Lake Constance and the Säntis region. Along the hiking trail past Bollenwees, Kreuzberge, Saxerlücke, Fälensee and Sämtisersee one can see many curious rock formations like folds, eroded structures and fissures that were created (like all of the Alps) through pressure from the collision between the Eurasian and the African plates and subsequent erosion. 20 illustrated panels along the way explain many of the phenomena. The hike took about 6 hours, and the steep descents were challenging for the knee joints. For the last leg from restaurant Ruhesitz down to the bottom terminal I rented a kickboard (without which I would have missed the last bus back to Weissbad). A very enjoyable trip, I recommend!
